A bird watcher's dream! Few places in the world can boast of so many different birds in such a small area. 820 species of birds — more than all of the United States and Canada combined — have been reported in Costa Rica, a country the size of West Virginia. Bird watchers are delighted when they hear that there are 75 bird families represented here that include 51 species of hummingbirds, 48 warblers, and 45 tanagers.

Not only is Costa Rica's avifauna diverse, but also well protected by a world-renowned national park system, and well studied by scientists from around the world. Lying between two great continents, each with its peculiar avifauna, Costa Rica is a land bridge where the faunas of the two continents meet and intermingle. Largely due to its geographical position and the diversity of its habitats, Costa Rica's avifauna is exceptional and its interesting and diverse mammal population is equally exciting.

Your leader on these special tours will be our Senior Guide, Rafael Campos. Former Assistant Curator for the University of Costa Rica and Field Assistant to Gary Stiles (author of A Guide to the Birds of Costa Rica), Rafa is recognized as one of Costa Rica's finest naturalists. A Caligo Ventures tour leader for more than two decades, his Central American experience includes studies on birds, bats, and primates as well as a number of botanical surveys.

Scarlet Macaw

Birds and Natural History Tours

February 2011 for the Southern Region
Feb. 21 - March 1;  $2,395, per person plus airfare.

This tour will visit the best of Southern Costa Rica, known for exceptional wildlife. Our first stop is Cabinas Chacon (Savegre Lodge) in the Talamanca Highlands, and Cerro de la Muerte, exploring the cloud forest for quetzals and guans, the highlands for Black-and-Yellow Silky Flycatcher and Sulphur-winged Parakeet, and the paramo for Volcano Junco and Timberline Wren.

We will then travel to Esquinas Rainforest Lodge where we could see Scarlet Macaw, Chestnut-mandibled Toucan, and Great Antshrike. Our lodge is located at the entrance to Piedras Blancas National Park, allowing exploration of both its botanical gardens and cacao and banana groves (great for attracting colorful toucans and parrots), as well as the lowland rainforest.

Next we move on to Las Cruces OTS Station and Wilson Botanical Garden. This mid-elevation tropical rain forest is home to such specialties as Blue-crowned Manakin and Fiery-billed Aracari, and the gardens produce numerous hummingbirds such as Fork-tailed Emerald, Charming Hummingbird, and White-crested Coquette.

Then on to the rain forest of Corcovado National Park and Casa Corcovado Lodge. This remote area is one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world, and its virgin rain forest offers a true wilderness experience. In this glorious rain forest we will hope for sightings of Great Tinamou, Great Currasow, Collared Forest-Falcon, Rufous Piha, White-throated Shrike Tanager, Black-cheeked Ant-Tanager, along with sloths, Squirrel Monkeys (one of the last strongholds of this species), howler, White-faced Capuchin, and Spider Monkeys, White-lipped Peccary, and the chance for a tapir or one of the elusive cats.
